Buick SUV sets record - KansasCity.com

By ANN M. JOB

For The Associated Press

It may be hard to believe, but Buick sold more sport utility vehicles last year than it did Regal, LaCross or Lucerne sedans.

All the SUVs were Enclaves - a high-riding, upscale family vehicle with seating for at least seven, a quiet interior, pleasant ride and decent power.Notably, even third-row seats in the roomy Enclave can be used by adults, and there's relatively easy access to the third row, thanks to a quick-lever release that gets second-row seats out of the way.The Enclave also earned a top, five-star overall crash test rating from the federal government after posting a five-star rating in side crash protection and four out of five stars in frontal crash protection.Pricing is up there, even for a base Enclave. But prices can still be less than those of some competitors. Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price is $37,175 for a base, 2012 Enclave with front-wheel drive. The lowest starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a 2012 Enclave with all-wheel drive is $39,175.All Enclaves have the same 288-horsepower, direct injection V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.Fuel economy ratings, which top out at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway in a front-wheel drive model, are comparable with other crossover SUVs. But other SUVs can have more power than the Enclave. For example, the 2012 Acura MDX, which has a starting retail price of $43,925, comes with a 300-horsepower V-6, six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive and is rated by the federal government at 16/21 mpg. Tthe 2012 Lincoln MKT, which starts at $46,160 for a front-wheel drive model, comes with a 303-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic and has the same 17/24-mpg rating as the Enclave. At nearly 17 feet long, the Enclave is among the larger crossover SUVs. Bumper to bumper, it's just an inch shy of a Cadillac Escalade with regular wheelbase.Unlike the Escalade, though, the Enclave rides on a car-based platform. While riding higher above the pavement than a regular car does, passengers ride a bit lower than in the Escalade. So, while passengers and driver have good views out the front and sides of the Escalade, they don't have a huge climb up to get inside. The Enclave's exterior styling makes it seem smaller than it is, and proportions are good.Adding to the appealing looks are 19- and 20-inch wheels and tires from the factory, some with chrome cladding. But the Enclave grille and headlights seems a bit dated these days, when light-emitting diode accent lights and fewer round-nosed grilles are becoming the norm.Frankly, the biggest complaint about the styling is how little the driver can see of what's behind the Enclave while backing up. Pillars at the sides of the rear window are sizable, and and liftgate metal comes up to meet the rear-window glass. This made reliance on the test vehicle's rearview camera imperative. The Enclave's 3.6-liter, dual overhead cam V-6 benefits from direct fuel injection, and the Enclave feels lively in city traffic and on flat two-lane roads.Power can come on strongly and torque peaks at 270 foot-pounds at 3,400 rpm, which provides acceptable mid-range performance and gets the 2-ton Enclave up and moving well. But with several passengers riding in higher altitudes and up-and-down hills, this engine can feel tapped.By comparison, the MDX V-6 delivers 270 foot-pounds at a 4,500 rpm. But the MDX, with standard all-wheel drive, weighs 230 pounds less than the hefty, 4,780-pound, base Enclave with front-wheel drive. And Lincoln's MKT has an uplevel engine that's a turbo, providing 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm.The Enclave's strong, confident engine sounds were a nice surprise for a Buick.Fuel economy, though, barely made it to 18 mpg in combined city/highway travel. The 18 mpg is equal to the combined mileage reported by the federal government for an all-wheel drive Enclave, and translated into 395 miles on an $85-plus fillup of the 22-gallon gas tank. The ride in the test Enclave was impressively quiet. There was a lightness to the steering but it was responsive, too. The weighty Enclave rode with some obvious heft, and passengers felt the vehicle weight transfer from side to side during curves.Front seats were wide and comfortable. Second-row seats were adjustable captain chairs that could move forward on tracks to help adjust legroom between second- and third-row passengers. Third-row passengers sit across a cushioned bench that rests closer to the floor than the first two rows, but there's still good headroom back there of 37.8 inches, down a bit from the 40.4 inches in the front seat.Cargo capacity is a whopping 115.9 cubic feet when second and third rows are folded down. With all the seats holding passengers, the back of the Enclave still offers 24.1 cubic feet of cargo room, more than most sedans. Towing capacity is 4,500 pounds.Consumer Reports puts Enclave reliability at below average.Last month, some 2012 Enclaves were recalled so dealers could tighten windshield wipers to prevent blades from coming loose.

What next for Romney? Undercut Obama, raise money

(AP) ? What's next for Mitt Romney? The Republican presidential nomination finally in hand, he will spend the next three months trying to undercut President Barack Obama on the economy while portraying himself as Mr. Fix It for a nation with stubbornly and painfully high unemployment.

Romney also faces key decisions between now and his acceptance of the party's nomination in late August in Florida: Where should he compete most aggressively? Who should be his running mate?

At the same time, he must dive anew into fundraising and work to win over voters who are distracted by their own summer plans and day-to-day pocketbook worries ? while withstanding Obama's attacks on his own claims as a jobs creator.

Not that Romney is publicly sweating the hurdles that come with being the little-known challenger to a personally popular president.

"People will get to know me better," Romney told Fox News in an interview that aired Wednesday, the day after he sealed the GOP nomination with his primary election victory in Texas. He says the general election campaign is only beginning even though his chief challenger dropped out more than six weeks ago.

With a smile, he said of the voters, "My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished."

As if on cue, Obama's campaign opened a fresh critique of the GOP nominee-in-waiting, assailing his economic record as governor of Massachusetts. It's the second phase of an effort by Obama to define Romney negatively in voters' eyes. The Democrat already has spent weeks hammering the Republican on his record at the private equity company he founded.

Obama himself made a courtesy call to Romney to congratulate him on his nomination victory. An Obama aide said the president told Romney in a brief and cordial chat that he looked forward to debating America's future with him.

Romney spent the day in California, plunging into a week filled with fundraisers and efforts to unite Republicans after a divisive primary season. Already he's proven adept at both, hauling in enough cash to cut into the advantage that Obama has while getting most of his former Republican rivals to close ranks around him.

He's also picking up high-profile endorsements. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice confirmed to The Associated Press that she is backing Romney.

Those efforts ? and the turning of his primary campaign into a general election operation ? have been his prime focus. He's making only a handful of public appearances for now, but aides say they expect the campaign to ramp up to a full sprint by July 4. Romney has said he plans to take a week off around the holiday, suggesting that may be the time when he makes final deliberations on whom to choose as his vice presidential nominee.

Little is known about just where in that process Romney may be, though there is no shortage of Republican rising stars informally auditioning for the role.

While work on that front is certainly going on behind the scenes, Romney's aides are spending this week publicly pressing anew a criticism that the candidate himself has been making for months against Obama. They're highlighting the hundreds of millions of dollars in economic stimulus money that the administration provided to Solyndra, the solar-energy company that went bankrupt and whose executives had contributed to Obama's campaign.

It is a sign of the overarching argument Romney will make against Obama in the coming weeks: that Obama's economic efforts have been politically motivated, have wasted taxpayer dollars and, ultimately, have failed.

The renewed Solyndra criticism is also an attempt to answer Obama's recent criticism ? in speeches and advertisements ? of Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital. Obama has argued that Romney's time as a private equity executive before entering politics ? the basis for his campaign's claim that he's best suited to lead an economic recovery ? was aimed at enriching shareholders, not serving the public.

Romney largely survived that opening salvo, judging by early polls and interviews with both Republicans and Democrats.

National surveys show Obama either statistically tied with Romney or only slightly ahead of him. And polls in the most hotly contested states show Romney competitive with Obama.

"They haven't worked," GOP strategist Charlie Black, an informal Romney adviser, said of the Bain criticisms. "People are worried about the economy and jobs."

Democratic strategist Steve Elmendorf said too few voters had heard the argument.

"The reality is it's June," said Elmendorf. "To say the Bain argument has worked or not is ridiculously premature."

A handful of swing-voting states will be the most hard fought as Obama and Romney aggressively build get-out-the-vote organizations and air a flood of advertisements in their efforts to reach the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

Across the country, Romney's campaign is going through growing pains as it seeks to turn a stripped-down primary operation into a full-scale general election campaign. Aides say offices will open and more staff will join the team, but they also say they don't anticipate being able to match the staffing levels of Obama, who has had teams in place for months in states like Florida and Ohio. The Republican National Committee also is in the midst of boosting its staffing to help Romney.

Already, Obama's and Romney's campaigns, as well as super PACs supporting and opposing each, have spent more than $80 million in advertising on the general election campaign through the month of June, according to ad-tracking reports provided to The Associated Press by Smart Media Group of Alexandria, Va.

Of that, Obama's campaign has spent $31 million-plus on TV ads in about 10 states. He's been on the air most heavily in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, an indication of where his team may think the race will be won or lost. A Democratic-leaning super PAC also has been on the air to help him, though it's spent only about $6.3 million.

Romney himself has run ads in just five battleground states: Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. But he's been significantly helped by pro-Romney outside groups, who have been on the air in several others ? most heavily in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.

Even so, Republican outfits, including Romney's campaign and supporting super PACS, have combined to spend about as much as Obama and his allies. And in the coming weeks, Romney plans to focus heavily on fundraising so that he'll be able to make strategic decisions about where to devote most of it state by state.

To that end, Romney is spending the week courting donors in California, starting Wednesday in Fresno, Bakersfield and in Hillsborough, a wealthy enclave just outside San Francisco.

He planned major fundraising events Thursday, Friday and Saturday in southern California. On Tuesday, Romney was in Las Vegas wooing Sheldon Adelson, the primary financing source of a group that backed Newt Gingrich's failed primary campaign. And Romney also attended a fundraiser hosted by Donald Trump.

Home Improvement: A Key To Living A Better Life - Games Problem

Your house is a direct reflection of who you are. You will be unhappy if you feel that your house is a poor reflection of yourself. You should use your home to get the most from your experience there. This article includes ideas on how you can turn your house into a home.

Consider how comfortable your home is. Although people can put up with minor imperfections, the most significant problems are ones that irritate us most. If you have a problem in your home, fix it. Instead of enduring that uncomfortable computer chair, restore or replace it! If the shelving in your home cannot be reached without a struggle, lower it to a level that is easily accessible. You can avoid bumps and bruises on your knees by replacing your angular coffee table with a more modern, round piece.

Sometimes, reorganizing your belongings will not create as much space as you need. You only have so much space to work with, even if you are organized. That is why adding an extension to your home is such a great idea. Even if you can only expand by a small amount, any extra space you can gain will be worth it.

You will want to add more areas of enjoyment. Many people purchase pools or hot tubs, but don?t feel limited to that. Home theaters, game rooms, or other small additions are also great ideas. Any type of recreational area can increase the value of the home.

Consider your lighting, and decide if it would be helpful to change it. Different light fixtures as well as types of bulbs can brighten your house, save money and may be easier to use, as they won?t have to be changed as often. Replacing old lights can improve the overall look of your home. Most light fixtures can be fixed on your own.

You may want to try growing something lush and green in a garden. Use a small part of your yard as a vegetable garden, or plant flowers around your mailbox. Even if you cannot do this on your own, a gardener can help and still give your yard the same effect. Also, if you decide to grow plants, they help improve air quality.

There are many ways to improve the external appearance of your home. A few small changes like new paint or windows can greatly enhance the look of your home?s exterior. Curbside appeal is something that you will appreciate everyday.

Because you spend so much time in your home, having a residence you truly love can help keep your general satisfaction levels high. Consequently, home improvement projects should be viewed as an investment in your property value as well as your own peace of mind.

Culture-sensitive Learning and Teaching in the EFL Classroom ...

posted by J?rgen Kurtz, Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen, Germany

In the current age of globalization, migration and digital communication, developing intercultural and/or transcultural communicative competence has become a priority aim in university and school education. Over the past years and decades, ?remarkable progress? has been made in international research in terms of understanding culture and how it is encoded in language. However, looking back at the 6th UCCLLT conference held in San Diego in April this year once again (see my previous post), I feel that official guideline recommendations on ?teaching culture? in the foreign/second language classroom, issued by the American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL 1996), the Council of Europe (2001), the Modern Language Association (2007), and over here in Germany (KMK 2003; the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs) are partially unknown to interested researchers, teachers, and students depending on where they live, work, or study.

Inspired by Claire Kramsch?s brilliant keynote speech delivered a few weeks ago in San Diego, I would like to draw your attention to the important publications mentioned above (linked to this blog on the sidebar to make them more easily accessible). Since culture and language integrated learning in FL/SL classrooms is of interest to reseachers, frontline educators, and univerity students world-wide, I would very much get to know more about the current state of discussion on teaching language and culture in integrated ways in other countries and what teachers actually do to promote culture-sensitive learning in everyday practice around the globe.

3:AM Magazine ? Horse latitudes

Jaimy Gordon interviewed by Thomas Bunstead.

jaimy-gordon

3:AM: Could you talk about your experience of racing tracks like Indian Mound Downs in Lord of Misrule??What do you think it is about this milieu that prompted you to write about it? Are there really men like Medicine Ed who cook up mad alchemies to dope the horses?

JAIMY GORDON: I worked on the racetrack from 1967 to 1970, mainly on two rundown half-mile tracks - Shenandoah Downs and Charles Town Races - in Charles Town, West Virginia. Most of the grooms in my day were African American, many from the deep South, especially South Carolina, Arkansas, and Mississippi, where the practice of folk magic or ?root-work? was widespread. Medicine Ed mixes up his own special horse goofer, but he also references the name of a company whose root-working products he favoured in the past - Lucky Heart Curios, Memphis, Tennessee - and that company was still in business when I began work on Lord of Misrule some years ago. One of their popular items was Jockey Club Fast Luck Oil, whose name suggests that it was not unknown on the racetrack, to gamblers and grooms alike.

3:AM: ?It was no need for studying and dreaming? (Medicine Ed says); ?You looked around for your twin? (Tommy Hansel says, addressing himself when he has gone mad). The ventriloquism in Lord of Misrule is magnificent and, in my eyes, must have done much to recommend the novel to the National Book Award panel. Do you find writing in this way comes naturally?

JG: Voice is my first interest, in other people?s writing and my own. I don?t keep a diary but I do write down peculiarities of diction, idiom and sentence structure when I hear them. I hoard curious slang, proverbs, and proverbial tropes like ?Some of them fellers wouldn?t work in a pie factory? (which I overheard from a farmer in West Virginia who didn?t like unions). And by the way, I?m a sucker for voice as well in music, theatre, politics, history, law and religion. Some things I like: opera; Leadbelly; Abraham Lincoln; Jussi Bj?rling; Bach cantatas; Shakespeare; Mary Wollstonecraft; Emma Goldman; Numbers, 22-24 (the story of Balaam and Balak); and virtually everything Captain Sir Richard F. Burton ever did, wrote, or translated.

3:AM: I read on a blog an interesting thread about the racetrack characters. Someone said they seemed caricatured, someone else was saying ?but if you know the people in this world, they are so mad and damaged and have lived so fast, they are often caricatures of themselves?. Where do you stand on this - are they realistic representations of people or exaggerated to carry other aspects of the story?

JG: A few critics have complained that they hear echoes of Damon Runyon in Lord of Misrule, especially when the novel is in the loan shark, Two-Tie?s point of view. For Two-Tie?s Yiddish?inflected wheeling and dealing, I borrowed the idiom of my mother?s shady uncles, especially my great uncle Willie, a loan shark who operated on the periphery of the racetrack and was murdered in Baltimore in 1980.

I do admit to having read Damon Runyon carefully. He was one of the most stylised American writers where voice is concerned and a great purveyor of vintage slang from the sporting life. When I landed on the racetrack in 1967, my first thought was: Wow, these people really do talk like Damon Runyon characters. For one, they favour perpetual present tense, especially when using the verb to win, which on the racetrack has only one form: ?My horse Pelter win last week. Two dollars say he win today and I think he win next week too.?

3:AM: Some of the main characters in Lord of Misrule appear in a short story of yours that was included in the Best American Short Stories 1995 anthology. What is the link between the two? Why did Lord of Misrule take another 15 years to appear, and what passed in-between?

JG: Your readers need to understand that I am the slowest writer in America, not only absurdly meticulous but also shamelessly distractible, likely, for example, to start taking Italian lessons three months before my deadline for Lord of Misrule (I did that, but luckily came to my senses).

As the slowest writer in all the Americas, I had vague plans to write the racetrack novel for 25 years before I even got around to writing that short story, ?A Night?s Work?,? in 1995. Favouring novels both to read and to write, I write few stories. This one, which introduces the loan shark, Two?Tie, and the handsome drunken blacksmith, Kidstuff, was a conscious sketch for the novel, an experiment above all to see whether I could call up the voices of that raffish and woebegone world at such a distance of time.

I had good luck with ?A Night?s Work?, and when I began to write Lord of Misrule, I aimed towards it and had every intention of wrapping the novel around it - that would have been 30 pages I wouldn?t have to write, after all - but I missed. There?s even a logical inconsistency between the two plots unless you consider the alcoholic blacksmith such a fixture of racetrack life as to be immortal, or anyway capable of coming back from the dead.

3:AM: A review in The Scotsman said that ?because of the way in which [main characters] Tommy and Maggie are mutually enslaved by their passions, the bizarre list of writers to whom Gordon has been none too precisely compared - Laurence Sterne, Kathy Acker, John Barth, TC Boyle, Cynthia Ozick - should include Leonard Cohen too.? ?Do you feel close to any of these writers?

JG: I certainly drank deep of Laurence Sterne for my more digressive and antic books (like She Drove Without Stopping, which was also modelled in some respects on Samuel Butler?s The Way of All Flesh), but not for Lord of Misrule. Kathy Acker, whom I knew, cultivated a crudity in her prose that made her beloved of her English audience (since English writers, unlike most Americans, usually have some polish to lose), but that aspect of her work didn?t draw me closer to her. What I do have in common with Acker is a willingness to look unblinkingly at bodily affinities, functions and secretions, including but not limited to sex.

I consider John Barth a genuine influence, along with the other brilliant American postmodernists John Hawkes and Robert Coover - I read them all and they?re all old enough, or would be if they?d lived - but Updike, Bellow and Robert Stone were also influences. As for women, it was mostly the English novelists, Elizabeth Bowen, Iris Murdoch, Muriel Spark, and even Margaret Drabble, who?s only a little older than I but showed me plenty. Cynthia Ozick I was delighted to discover at an age when my sense of style in prose was already fully formed. I think both of us were probably influenced by Isaac Bashevis Singer, vintage Gimpel the Fool. Leonard Cohen? I was more susceptible to Ray Charles, Leadbelly, Ma Rainey, Schumann?s settings of Heine and Eichendorff, Jan??ek?s ?From the House of the Dead - and I used to weep to the old East Berliner Communist cabaret singer Ernst Busch.

untitled

3:AM: As well as the shuffling narrative - some scenes are completed and then begun again half way through from another character?s perspective - I was particularly interested in Lord of Misrule?s slipping between first and third person - like the un-signposted shifts between past and present in She Drove Without Stopping - which I understand from certain blogs some readers have found challenging, but I think others will enjoy for exactly that reason. I wanted to ask why you think you went for these techniques, why they were appropriate for this story, but also how you feel your concern for voice and technical ?innovation? fits into a tradition - if there are other writers you are speaking to?

JG: In a way, my earliest intention with Lord of Misrule was more retro than innovative: I wanted to write a social novel in which, Middlemarch-like, all the human types within that society would be represented - only, the society would be the cheapest, crookedest racetrack in West Virginia. I was going to use free indirect discourse, also known as third person effaced or limited narration, also known as third person interior point of view - the commonest choice in presenting point of view in fiction since Flaubert - and I was going to work from the discrete points of view of four different human characters.

For once I wasn?t going to include a character anything like me - there I fell down on the job, as you know - and although I always meant to follow the advice of my old teacher John Hawkes and make the horses into full characters, I didn?t know I would occasionally dip into a horse?s point of view; it just happened. I found myself departing from third person with the horse trainer, Tommy Hansel, who, as you noticed, is half mad from the start, and whose grandiloquent thoughts about himself and others always hover above his head in second person, looking eerily down.

What makes the book most unusual for readers, I think, is how heavily the exposition of view is inflected by the way those four characters would actually speak, including the Jewish loan shark and the old timey black groom. That the four points of view are somewhat incongruent, even when they observe the same scene - that I offer no ?master narrative?, as one critic noted with some dismay. Well, haven?t we learned anything about the nature of truth in the last 150 years? And especially on a racetrack?

3:AM: Would you talk about the relationship between Jane in She Drove Without Stopping and Maggie in Lord of Misrule? Both are runaways, and both have their relatively violent relationships with men humorously depicted. What interests you about them? Why do you find yourself driven to explore their experiences?

JG: As I said, I didn?t want to let that reckless young woman into Lord of Misrule, and when she wormed her way in anyway. I was so disgusted that I couldn?t bring myself to finish the novel for the next five years, until my old friend Bruce McPherson, the editor of McPherson & Company, trapped me into going back to work on it by sending me an old corrupt file in galley proofs. Not that I had disliked her all along. After all, Maggie or her near relations show up in She Drove Without Stopping, Bogeywoman, and also a book-length narrative poem I wrote about convicts and ex-convicts of my acquaintance, ?The Bend, The Lip, The Kid?.

There was a time, when I was about thirty-five and began to feel more or less safe from her, that I thought that wild young woman I had been in my twenties could be my literary stock in trade. But she hadn?t panned out - others, it seemed, didn?t find her as fascinating a character type as I did - and so I blamed her for my deepening obscurity. Once Lord of Misrule did so well, I was glad to acknowledge my maternity, so to speak. What interests me about her? She?s an American romantic, a drifter, a seeker of adventure, but adventure looks different on women than it looks on men, likewise drifting from lover to lover, place to place.

I think that, like Robert Stone, I like to put my protagonists into peril of their lives because only then will they begin to fight for them, and to wake to the fact that maybe this was their purpose all along. But this trait too looks different in women than it looks in men.

3:AM: An enigmatic line from She Drove Without Stopping that I?d like you to comment on, if you would: ?Books Jane liked, though in her care they were tinged, even brand new, with the melancholy of their early deaths.?

JG: I only meant that Jane isn?t any more careful of her books than she is of her own body. The better she likes them, the longer she hauls them around with her, exposes them to weather, drops them in bathtubs, shoves them into rucksacks, eats next to them, sleeps on top of them, floats them in the bilge of rowboats, etc. I wish I didn?t have this trait, and I?m better now than I was at Jane?s age, but compared to those of most writers, my books are a mess.

3:AM: What are you working on now?

JG: I?m working on a novel about a Jewish woman who is married to a German and living uneasily in his small town of Muckelried, where she finds six Jews who have been hiding in a cave since the war. Meanwhile she badgers her husband into inquiring into the wartime history of Muckelried, which he reluctantly does. In time their researches converge.

3:AM: What are you reading now and have you enjoyed reading recently?

JG: In connection with this project, I?m reading Victor Klemperer?s wartime diaries, Gregor von Rezzori?s Memoirs of an Anti-Semite, the correspondence of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal - as you can see, I?m taking the long way around.

What else have I read lately? My favourite novel of the last few years was Orhan Pamuk?s Snow, so now I?m reading his Istanbul. I admire the Australian novelist Gail Jones; I have three books of hers on my table, including her latest, Five Bells. I get sent every new horse book in the world these days. The best of them, also from Australia, is Foal?s Bread, by Gillian Mears. I loved Karen Russell?s Swamplandia, Karen tei Yamashita?s I Hotel. I?m reading Anne Carson?s The Beauty of the Husband - stunningly good, as absorbing as any novel. John Donatich?s new novel The Variations, about an inner city priest who?s losing his faith - extraordinary.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -European Championship co-hosts Kiev and Warsaw have decried as unfair a BBC report that portrayed their fans as racist, and UEFA reiterated that all foreign guests will be safe.

The BBC Panaroma documentary, titled "Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate," showed fans in Ukraine and Poland giving the Nazi salute and taunting black players with monkey noises. Asian students were also shown being attacked at Metalis Stadium in Kharkiv, one of the host venues.

Former England captain Sol Campbell said in the program broadcast on Monday in Britain that fans should not travel to those countries "because you could end up coming back in a coffin."

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Voloshyn said the program was unjust and smacked of arrogance and xenophobia as it portrayed "Eastern Europe as mentally not equal to the rest of Europe."

"We believe this report is outrageous, done in the best traditions of Soviet journalism," Voloshyn said. "Ukraine is one the leaders in Europe in terms of religious and racial tolerance.

"Nazi symbols can be seen at ... any match in England, but does it mean that fans should not come to London for the Olympics?"

Markian Lubkivsky, UEFA's Euro 2012 director in Ukraine, said foreign fans coming to Ukraine would be safe.

"From UEFA's point of view, I see no threats for citizens of various nationalities to stay in Ukraine," Lubkivsky was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. He added Campbell's statement was "vexing" for Ukraine.

In Poland, the government body that is organizing Euro 2012 called the accusations of racism "unjust," stressing that Poland has zero tolerance for racism and xenophobia.

"The problem of stadium pathologies, such as xenophobia or racism, is a problem specific to the whole of Europe and not only to Poland," said Mikolaj Piotrowski, a spokesman for the body. "As in every European country, it affects a small minority of those present at the stadiums - unfortunately, a minority that is usually loud and visible in the media."

Referring to Campbell, he said, "Dear Sol, feel invited - feel like at home; in Poland, at our common Euro 2012. Get to know us as we really are."

Poland's Interior Ministry said in statement it would complain to the BBC because its report contained "unjust," biased and unverified opinions. Ministry spokeswoman Malgorzata Wozniak said Polish police were ready to ensure security during the tournament.

Commenting on the program, Campbell urged fans to not go to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012, which starts next week.

"Stay at home, watch it on TV. Don't even risk it," said Campbell, who was black.

He added that European football's governing body was wrong to award the tournament to Poland and Ukraine.

"What they should say is, `If you want this tournament, you sort your problems out. Until we see a massive improvement ... you do not deserve these prestigious tournaments in your country,"' he said.

Ukraine finds itself under increasing scrutiny and pressure as it prepares to host the championship. Besides the racism accusations, President Viktor Yanukovych is under harsh criticism for the politically tainted jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Some critics say Euro 2012 has turned into a public relations disaster for Ukraine.

95% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (88) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gorgeously shot, ingeniously crafted, ?ber-Andersonian bonbon that, even in its most irritatingly whimsical moments, remains an effective deliverer of cinematic pleasure.

"Moonrise Kingdom" breezes along with a beautifully coordinated admixture of droll humor, deadpan and slapstick.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom is bewitching.

A lot of wonderful things running around the wilderness in this particular Kingdom; if only the tongue-in-cheek wasn't as firmly hammered into place.

Cloth diapers - berlingrandslam.com | blog focus on home and ...

There are many benefits of cloth diapers that go far beyond the health of your baby?s skin. The first and most important, less abrasive cloth diapers against baby?s soft, sensitive skin, which is less rash than disposable diapers. Cloth is much more economical, because they wash the diapers and over again instead of throwing them away like a discarded after use, how it was designed. Diapers can be very expensive if you need to keep buying them, and the dress is a one-time investment that is for multiple uses. They are also better for the environment because they are often non-biodegradable disposable diapers and cloth is not meant to be thrown away.

The best advantage is that most parents have experienced the use of cloth diapers that babies potty train earlier than most kids to wear disposable ones. On average, the babies are wearing potty train a maximum of six months earlier than expected, studies have demonstrated room cleanliness. If you talk to the parents used to make cloth, you might say that the baby was potty trained before two years.

(AP) ? International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde says she has more sympathy for poor African children than Greeks suffering under the country's economic problems and austerity measures.

Making clear that the IMF has no plans to relent on its austerity requirements for the country, Lagarde said she was aware that many Greeks were struggling to access services like healthcare because of the country's economic crisis, but believed people in other countries deserved more sympathy.

"I think more of the little kids from a school in a little village in Niger who get teaching two hours a day, sharing one chair for three of them, and who are very keen to get an education," she said in an interview with the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper published Saturday. "I have them in my mind all the time. Because I think they need even more help than the people in Athens."

Lagarde pointed to Greece's culture of tax evasion as a major factor behind the country's financial difficulties, saying: "So, you know what? As far as Athens is concerned, I also think about all those people who are trying to escape tax all the time."

Greeks "should also help themselves collectively" by paying their taxes, she said.

Greece's economy is being kept afloat on international loans provided by the European Union and the IMF, along with a harsh austerity package of cuts and higher taxes that is deeply unpopular with the country's electorate. The government that agreed to the loan and austerity package was voted out of office in May.

The new parties, who mainly campaigned on anti-austerity platforms ? have not been able to form a government and new elections are scheduled for June 17. One of the most popular parties in Greece, the left-wing Syriza party, wants to abolish Greece's international bailout agreements, raising fears that Greece will leave the Eurozone and destabilize world markets.

Financial debt Management ? Assist on Credit card debt Reduction ...

Author: admin | Date: 05/25/2012 | Please Comment!

Debt reduction is the process of negotiating with creditors to reduce overall debts in exchange for a lump sum payment. A successful settlement occurs when the creditor agrees to forgive a percentage of total account balance. Only the unsecured debts not secured by real assets like home can be settled.

In order to work with a debt settlement company, a consumer needs lump sum cash (best scenario), or needs to build up enough funds over pre-determined period of time. For consumers who have no cash to make a lump sum settlement offer, debt settlement companies set up a third party ?trust? account where funds accumulate. By negotiating debts on their own, debtors are able to save in fees that would otherwise be paid to a debt settlement company or an attorney for the settlement process. While the do-it-yourself option offers the debtor more control and reduced fees, there are negatives generally associated with this option.

You are not the only one who is unable to repay the creditors back. There are endless individuals like you. But, the situation is such that no one can be blamed. Thus, even though they continuously make calls, they cannot do anything more such as slap a legal case.moreover; they have a fear to contend with. It is bankruptcy.

Because of the recession, the government has also done its bit by giving some monetary grants to these financial bodies. Therefore, they can no longer complain that they would turn bankrupt if you did not pay the whole amount at once. That is why it would be a great idea to capitalize on this recessionary phase and negotiate a lower payment.

Thus, you can see that coming out of dues is not that difficult and you can easily achieve financial debt management through these suggestions.

4 Rules To Transform A Long Distance Love On The Internet Into A ...

Let?s suppose that you are meeting someone online and that person seem to be the match of your life, but is living far away from you. Does it worth to spend your time in a long distance? relationship with this person?

What if this person is really your soul mate?

You may be surprised how much a relationship can grow if you work at it. If you know and apply some simple rules, your relationship can turn out to be one of the most successful and happy relationships that ever existed.

Distance, combined with phone calls and writing, electronically or through regular mail, can foster an enviable intimacy which results from learning about another?s qualities, values and ways of thinking, sensitivities, dreams, and aspirations. This type of intimacy can make your coming together much more special.

And, as if relationships weren?t complicated enough, having them across a long distance is extremely challenging. Just read the following rules and try to keep them in mind and apply them:

1. The quality of a relationship is more likely to increase if both people develop the ability to share feelings openly with each other. Do not be afraid to tell your partner what you really need and want from him or her, he or she deserves to know the truth and judge whether they can give it to you.

2. Make the relationship a high priority. Avoid canceling reunions or putting off a phone call.

3. Keep in touch daily. If large phone bills are a concern, send e-mail, letters, cards and even faxes. And when you do make contact, don?t just stick to love talk, but keep each other informed on the day-to-day aspects of your lives. This way each of you is aware of how the other is thinking, feeling and developing.? Late-night talks and thoughtful letters can convey a lot of what is most important in the long-term: your goals, values and dreams.

4. Be prepared to be flexible. Tell your partner of how much you think about and love him or her and you will score some important points. Making them miss you more and you?ll fill them with the constant urge to see you. But don?t be possessive.? Being paranoid and accusing will only grow doubts, insecurity and tension between you and none of those will help the relationship develop successfully.

If your partner truly wants to be with you, then they would not want to wait forever to have you next to her or him. As long as you both trust each other, inform one another of your personal lives, keep in touch, your relationship can turn out into a happy normal relationship.

Ultimately, a fabulous relationship is your goal ? right?
